What is the black bar?

Black bars, also known as pillarboxing or letterboxing, are the vertical or horizontal bands of black that appear on the sides or top and bottom of a video or image. They occur when the aspect ratio of the content does not match the aspect ratio of the display or output medium.

Vertical black bars (pillarboxing) appear on the sides of the content when it is displayed on a screen or in a format with a narrower aspect ratio. This is often the case when watching older 4:3 content on a widescreen display.

Horizontal black bars (letterboxing) appear at the top and bottom of the content when it is displayed on a screen or in a format with a wider aspect ratio. This happens when widescreen content is displayed on a narrower aspect ratio display.
